The US Bishops’ Conference has developed an online Advent calendar for adults. The site includes daily prayers, readings and reflections. It also sometimes includes audio and video clips. It’s a simple way to take a few moments each day to prepare for the coming Christmas season.

Voting and Politics – Bridging the Gap Between Faith and Politics
February 25, 2008Politics dominate the news these days. Whether it’s the latest on the presidential campaigns or discussion on hot issues such as immigration, mortgage banking reforms, tax relief or the war in Iraq, we are challenged to form opinions on these issues. How does our faith inform these opinions?
The US bishops have developed a very helpful website called Faithful Citizenship. The website provides information and resources for Catholics of all ages. A special section called “Family Guide” suggests numerous opportunities for parents to discuss political issues and values with their children. A section on “Prayer and Reflection” offers Scripture readings, intercessory prayers, and other resources to help deepen ones grasp and practice of Catholic Social Teaching. Another section for “Teachers and Catechists” even includes sample lesson plans and games to use in a classroom or family setting. Official church documents are also available on the website as well as discussion questions that can be used for a parish small group discussion.
The website is continuing to expand its section for youth and young adults. As the political debates heat up, this website will serve as a valuable resource for all.

US Bishops Gather Today for Annual Fall Meeting
November 12, 2007Every November, the US Bishops gather for a business meeting. At this meeting, they collaborate and work together to make decisions and recommendations related to activities of the Catholic Church across the country.
This year’s meeting starts today, Monday, November 12 and will continue through Thursday, November 15. The gathering, which is held in Baltimore, MD, is not open to the public, but the media covering the event will be issuing press releases and writing stories about each major decision.
Topics up for a vote include a brochure on stewardship for teenagers, two catechetical items, a statement on faith and politics, and the revision of guidelines for music at Mass. In addition, the bishops will vote for new officers of the Bishops’ Conference, as well as new committe chairs.
The bishops will also receive the preliminary results of a research project seeking to identify the causes and context of the clergy sexual abuse crisis.
